On Saturday, September 6, at our 2008-2009 general membership "kick-off" meeting, Jan Parker, Vice-President of Programs, reviewed a slide presentation of AAUW's latest educational research entitled "Where the Girls Are."
The presentation was followed with a lively round-table discussion at each table regarding what research data appeared significant to us, and what we felt we could do in our own community to support this vital educational mission.
General feedback from each table included the following comments:
1. AAUW's research revealed that its focus on "advanced equality for girls through education" was successful. In addition, as some had claimed, the research revealed that AAUW's focus on education for girls was not accomplished at the "expense" of the boys. In fact, the research revealed that the boys academic achievement paralleled the girls; i.e., if the girls performed better, the boys did better.
2. As anticipated, the girls were slightly better in language skills than boys, and conversely, boys were slightly better in math and science skills than girls.
