Marguerite reports: In August, we were contacted through our web site by Fort Hunter Liggett. They asked me to speak at their Women’s Equality Observance on August 29. Kaye Rasband, our President Elect, went with me. The celebration was held on the base at the Hacienda as they call the beautiful old Hearst Hunting Ranch building designed by Julia Morgan. I spoke about the purpose and aims of AAUW; about how far we have come and about our current challenges. A young motivational coach from Salinas, Julie Cavassa also spoke. She was fun. The hall was lavishly decorated with portraits of women leaders in all fields as well as chair covers with blue sashes and vases of flowers on the buffet tables. Kaye and I really didn’t know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised. The base Commander, Col. James Suriano, gave a nice introductory speech. He is from Wyoming, one of the first states to allow women to vote and had the first woman governor.
