AAUW-CA EF State Named Gift Honoree
Elizabeth Henley Putman

Our heart-felt congratulations and admiration go to Elizabeth "Liz" "Betty" Henley Putman, winner of this year’s AAUW-CA State Education Foundation ("EF") Named Gift Honoree award, and a long-time branch member.

Branches from through out the state nominated women for this prestigious award and Betty was chosen for her exemplary service to AAUW and to EF.  The award will be presented at the annual AAUW State Convention in late April.

"Betty"

Betty was the Atascadero President from 1979-1981; she was State Taking Hold of Technology Chairman in the 1980's giving workshops on changing a light switch, plumbing, electric saws, etc.

Betty started a Membership Sandpile Group to increase membership in 1981; she published (before emails) The Friendly Connection of 56 branches of members willing to help other AAUW members, visiting their city. She was the central coast District Chair 1985-87; she started the San Luis County Inter-branch; she strongly supported EF and encouraged branch and state participation in fundraisers throughout all the years she was active in the branch, 1974-2006.

In the 1980s, Betty helped with the local junior high careeer day for two years and she was instrumental in organizaing an inter-branch Math-Science Day for 7-10th grade girls at Cuesta Junior College which was held for two years; she received the Atascadero EF Named Gift Honoree in 1984; she received the Local Community Service Award in 1990; and she received the local President's Board Award in 1991 and 1994.  In 2007, she moved to Hood River at the age of 91 to be near a niece.  She attended the general meeting celebrating the branch's 70th anniversary in 2006 and was involved in the Friendship Committee until she moved to Oregon State.

Betty helped start Mobile Meals for seniors in Atascadero and delivered meals for years.  She helped start the Women's Resource Center in Atascadero, which continues today with two women's shelter homes in Atascadero and Paso Robles.

Betty helped start the Friends of the Library in Atascadero in order to get our local library built.  She was behind and helped organize the Community Action Grant that our branch received in 1985 for Art Park.  This grant was to expose local rural elementary children to different forms of art and cultural activities.  She started the Friendship Committee, which acts as an extended family to members in need of support when ill, in bereavement, and for celebrations.

Betty started all the branch awards still given annually; the Mug Award which is exceptional service to the branch by a non member; the Community Service Award given to a member who shows strong committment to the community in some way; the President's Board Award who is someone who has helped the president in her year, but who was not on the Board.  Betty had a part in establishing a local scholarship given to a re-entry college bound resident of Atascadero or Templeton.  She funded Atascadero's first EF Named Gift Honoree Award as a Christmas present to the person in 1980.

Betty set an example of innovative and industrious leadership, an example  that motivates all of us to meet our AAUW mission-related goals.
