MISSION: American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through education, advocacy, and research.
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA: Atascadero is located in the central coast area of California. In addition to Atascadero, this branch serves Santa Margarita and Templeton.
HISTORY: The Atascadero branch of AAUW was chartered in November 1937. It was the first branch in SLO County and later helped establish the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo branches. Members of the Atascadero branch have begun other community organizations, such as Friends of the Library, Mobile Meals, and the North County Women's Resource Center.
MEMBERSHIP: Membership is open to all graduates who hold an associate or equivalent degree as well as to those who hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Both in principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin or disability. MEETINGS/INTEREST GROUPS: The Atascadero branch holds monthly meetings from September through May. We offer many other opportunities to get acquainted through social get-togethers and our interest groups, including book discussion groups, a hiking group, a Scrabble group, Great Decisions, etc.
FRIENDSHIP: The Atascadero branch has a tradition of acting as an extended family to members when a support group would be helpful for congratulations, condolences, or meals.
